When researching an Airsoft company, you should make yourself aware of the parts that come with a particular type of gun. Just because two guns look very similar does not mean that they were made with the same parts, nor does it mean that they will function the same way once you begin using them. The batteries that come with your guns are very important, since they determine how long you can use the gun each time. Batteries also have varying life spans, so it is a good idea to learn as much as possible about the type that came with your gun to see what you can expect out of it.
Nickel Cadmium
The first Airsoft guns on the market came with nickel cadmium batteries. Keep in mind that these batteries are extremely limited, so it is doubtful that Airsoft companies still provide them in their newer models. The main problem with these batteries is that they need to be fully discharged before you can recharge them. Therefore, you could not simply head out, shoot a few rounds, and then recharge the battery, as this would cause battery memory. This battery memory would reduce the available charge significantly the next time you used the gun and would mean that the battery would eventually have to be replaced.
Nickel-Metal Hydride
If you have purchased your gun in the last few years, there is a good chance that it came with a nickel-metal hydride battery. These are the most common batteries in the Airsoft market and are also the safest for use in this environment. You are not required to fully discharge these batteries before putting the gun into storage, making them much more convenient to use. They are also relatively inexpensive, which is perhaps the main reason for their popularity with Airsoft users.
Lithium Polymer
High-end Airsoft guns now use a lithium polymer battery, which is similar to what is used in your cell phone. These batteries have a longer battery life than the other types and are much lighter, making them easier to carry around as you shoot. Another benefit is that they perform the same way at the beginning of their charge as they do when they are almost depleted, which is another feature that Airsoft users love.
